Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information 5KANA — an app by 5JAPANESE — collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. It applies to the 5KANA mobile app and to this website.

1. Who we are

5KANA is a Japanese Hiragana and Katakana learning app made by 5JAPANESE (also known online as 5japaneseapp). 5KANA is currently 5JAPANESE's only product.

2. No account required

5KANA does not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide your name, email address, or any other personal identifier to use the app. There is no login system anywhere in 5KANA.

3. Information collected — your learning data

To let you track your own progress, 5KANA stores the following directly on your device, using your device's local app storage:

  • Which kana you've learned or are reviewing, and your spaced-repetition progress for each
  • XP, streak, and daily practice-time history
  • App settings — theme, font, pronunciation, haptics, language, and similar preferences

This app data stays on your device. 5JAPANESE does not operate a server or database that the 5KANA app sends this information to, and we do not have a copy of it. Uninstalling the app, or using Settings → Reset App Data inside the app, permanently deletes it.

4. Advertising (Google AdMob)

5KANA includes one optional, opt-in advertising feature: a "Watch an ad" button (Settings → Support Us) that shows a rewarded video ad via Google AdMob purely as an optional way to support the app. Ads are never shown automatically, and this feature gives no in-app reward, XP, or unlock of any kind — it exists only as an optional way to support 5JAPANESE.

When an ad is requested, Google AdMob may collect and process information such as your advertising identifier, general device information, and approximate location, in order to serve and measure ads. This processing is carried out by Google, governed by Google's Privacy Policy and Google's How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services page. 5JAPANESE does not control what Google collects or how long Google retains it.

Where required (for example, for users in the EEA and UK), 5KANA uses Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) to request your consent for personalized advertising before any ad is requested.

5. Other third-party services

5KANA's Settings screen includes a "Support 5KANA" link to 5JAPANESE's Patreon page (patreon.com/5japaneseapp). This opens in your device's own browser, outside the app. We do not receive any data from Patreon about you, and Patreon's own privacy policy governs any information you choose to give them there.

5KANA also loads its default Japanese display typeface (Shippori Mincho) from Google Fonts' servers (fonts.googleapis.com / fonts.gstatic.com) when your device has an internet connection. Loading a web font this way sends your device's IP address to Google, in the same way any web request does — Google's own Privacy Policy governs that request. No account or advertising identifier is involved in this specific request.

Aside from Google AdMob, this Google Fonts request, and the outbound Patreon link above, the 5KANA app does not integrate any other third-party analytics, advertising, or data-processing service. The website's optional analytics are covered in section 6.

6. Website analytics (Google Analytics 4)

This section applies only to this website (5japaneseapp.github.io), not to the 5KANA app. The website uses Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-4K2XZMSN7D), provided by Google, to count visits and understand which pages are useful. It is optional and is switched off unless you consent.

Consent. When you first visit, a banner asks you to accept or reject analytics. Until you accept, the website does not load Google Analytics, does not contact Google's analytics servers, and does not set analytics cookies. If you reject, nothing is loaded and the banner is not shown again in that browser unless you reopen the settings.

What is collected. If you accept, Google Analytics may collect information such as the pages you view, approximate location derived from your IP address, browser and device type, referring site, and how you interact with the site. This is used for aggregate statistics about the website. We do not use it for advertising, and Google signals and ad personalization are switched off in our implementation.

Cookies and local storage. If you accept, Google Analytics sets two first-party cookies on this website: _ga (distinguishes visitors) and _ga_4K2XZMSN7D (maintains session state). According to Google, these can last up to two years. Separately, the website stores your choice (accepted or rejected) in your browser's local storage under the name 5j-analytics-consent, so that the banner is not shown on every visit. This is not used for tracking.

Changing or withdrawing consent. You can change your choice at any time using the "Analytics settings" link in the footer of any page. If you withdraw consent, analytics stops, the Google Analytics cookies set by this website are deleted from your browser, and the page reloads. You can also delete cookies and local storage at any time in your browser settings.

Google's role and international transfers. Google processes this data on our behalf. Google may process and store it on servers in countries outside the European Economic Area and the UK, including the United States, subject to the safeguards Google describes in its documentation. See Google's Privacy Policy and How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services. Analytics data is kept in Google Analytics for the retention period configured in our account.

Legal basis. Where the GDPR applies, we rely on your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time without affecting earlier processing.

Hosting. The website is hosted on GitHub Pages. As with any web host, GitHub may process technical data such as your IP address when your browser requests a page, regardless of your analytics choice. See GitHub's Privacy Statement.

7. What we don't do

  • We don't require or ask for your name, email, or phone number to use the app
  • We don't run analytics or crash-reporting SDKs inside the 5KANA app (optional website analytics are described in section 6)
  • We don't sell your information — we don't hold a database of your app learning data to sell, and we don't sell website analytics data

8. Children's privacy

5KANA is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app requires no account and no personal information to use, the app does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children. The website's optional analytics (section 6) are likewise not directed at children, and are only activated if the visitor accepts them.

9. Data retention and deletion

Your learning data and settings remain on your device for as long as the app is installed, or until you clear it yourself via Settings → Reset App Data or by uninstalling 5KANA. Since this app data is never transmitted to us, there is nothing further for us to delete on our end. Website analytics data, if you accepted analytics, is held in Google Analytics for the retention period configured in our account (see section 6); you can withdraw consent at any time.

10. Security

5KANA stores its data using your device's standard local app storage, protected by your device's own operating system and security settings. Since we do not operate servers holding your app data, the main safeguard for it is the security of your own device. Website analytics data, if you accepted analytics, is processed by Google under Google's own security measures (see section 6).

11. Your privacy rights (GDPR and similar laws)

Because the 5KANA app does not send personal data to our servers, most data-subject rights (access, correction, deletion, portability) are already fully in your control on-device — you can view your own progress in the app at any time, and delete it instantly via Settings → Reset App Data. This applies to the app only: if you accepted analytics on the website, data about your visit is processed through Google Analytics (section 6), and you can withdraw your consent at any time or contact us about it at the email below.

For advertising identifiers processed by Google AdMob, you can manage ad personalization directly through your device's ad settings or Google's own Ads Settings. If you have any other privacy question or request, contact us at the email below and we will do our best to help.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, if 5KANA's features change. Updates will be published on this page with a new "Last updated" date. Continued use of 5KANA after a change means you accept the updated policy.
